Three Strange Criminal Sentences

This article is about three strange punishments assigned by judges. This list includes the story of a woman who was forced to hold a sign labelling herself an idiot, the man who had to post 466 apologies on Twitter, and the judge who arrested the entire courtroom because of a phone alert.

3. 466 Twitter Apologies

A man who posted insults about two French politicians on Twitter was ordered to create 466 apology tweets. The number of apologies corresponded to the number of people following him on Twitter. For each apology that was not posted, he was fined  €100. The apologies, translated into English, said, ‘I have severely insulted Jean-Francois Cope and Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet. I regret and apologise.’ (Source) (Source)

2. Woman Forced to Hold ‘Idiot’ Sign

A woman in Cleveland decided to drive on a sidewalk instead of on the road, as she did not want to wait for a school bus to pass. Her driving was caught on video, as seen below:

Some witnesses claim she did this on a daily basis. As a result of her reckless driving, she was forced to hold a sign reading, ‘Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus,’ during two days of morning traffic rush, for a total of 120 minutes. She also had to pay a $250 fine. (Source) (Source)

After the judge said this, an officer stood at the door to keep people from leaving, while other officers searched for the phone. They did not find it, and the judge attempted to follow up on his threat, placing bail for each of the 46 people in the courtroom at $1,500. (Source) (Source) (Source)

According to the report, a man complained about the punishment not being fair, to which the judge responded, “I know it isn’t.” (Source)

Fourteen people were unable to pay the bail money and were sent to Niagra County Jail however, they were released later that day. (Source)

The judge said this occurred as a result of stress in his personal life. (Source)

Split Brains

Everyone’s brain is made up of two halves, called hemispheres. These hemispheres are connected by a part of the brain called the corpus callosum. In the past, the corpus callosum was cut to treat epilepsy. However, when this part of the brain was cut, the two brain hemispheres would not be able to communicate, thus creating a split brain.

If you had a split brain, each of your brain’s hemispheres would be capable of having their own emotions, opinions, and personalities. The two hemispheres are also capable of disagreeing. Since your right hemisphere controls the left half of your body, and your left hemisphere controls the right side of your body, your hemispheres could have physical disagreements.

For example, if the right half of your body picks up a piece of food, and your right hemisphere doesn’t want you to eat it, your left hand (controlled by the right hemisphere) could try and remove of the food.

Usually, the left hemisphere of the brain controls speech. The left hemisphere’s dominant functions include math, logic, and language. The right hemispheres dominant functions include visualizing images, facial recognition, and music. The right hemisphere and left hemisphere can both see through your eyes on the halves of the body they control.

If you showed the left hemisphere an object, then asked a split brain patient what they saw, they would be able to tell you. However, since the right hemisphere cannot speak, if it was shown an object, and you asked, “What did you see?” the left hemisphere would be the one to respond, saying “Nothing.”

This fact is extremely creepy as it reveals a separate mind in a split brain patient’s head that is mute and sentient.

What would you do if you had a split brain? How would you cope with the two hemispheres of your brain constantly fighting over decisions?

True Stories of People Being Buried Alive

Essie Dunbar

Essie Dunbar was declared dead in 1915 at the age of 30. Essie’s funeral was delayed by a day so her sister could attend. Her sister was late, and saw the coffin being buried. Her sister demanded to see the body, one more time. Essie was dug up, and she climbed out of the coffin, completely alive. She lived another 47 years before actually dying.

Mina El Houari

During May of 2014, a 25 year old woman named Mina El Houari had a date planned. During the middle of the date, Mina collapsed to the ground, supposedly dead. However, her date decided to bury her instead of calling the police or getting an ambulance. Mina died, but her family and the police discovered her buried in the man’s backyard. They determined that she had only entered a diabetic coma.

Voluntarily Buried Alive

A Russian man dug a hole in a garden, and he persuaded his friend to bury him. The man buried himself with air holes in the coffin, water bottles, and a cell phone for emergencies. He was killed because heavy rain leaked into his coffin, blocking his air holes. Investigators believe that the man buried himself because he thought it would grant him good luck.

Angelo Hays

In 1937, Angelo Hays was 19 years old. He was riding on his motorcycle when he crashed into the curb, and he was thrown into a brick wall. Angelo was buried, but a life insurance company became suspicious. Angelo’s father purchased life insurance for Angelo only a few months before the accident.

The insurance company demanded that the body was dug up so that the cause of Angelo’s death could be verified. Yet surprisingly, the doctor discovered Angelo was still alive in the coffin. He was rushed to the hospital, and he made a full recovery.

Sipho William Mdletshe

In 1993, a man named Sipho William Mdletshe was in a car accident. His passenger, who was also his fiance, survived. Doctors believed Sipho was dead. He was brought to a cemetery to be buried, and he was placed in a metal coffin. He was unconscious for two days in the coffin, until he awoke and he began to scream, and shake the coffin. Workers at the cemetery dug him up, and he luckily survived.

The Worst Animal Mothers

Pandas can be good mothers. They can care for a cub, feed it, and keep it safe. That is, unless the Mother has twins.

The Mother decides which of the twin pandas is the weakest, and she abandons it. An example of a panda who did this would be the National Zoo’s panda, named Mei Xiang. When Mei gave birth to two twin pandas, the zookeepers realized the smaller panda had been regurgitating food and struggling to gain weight. Mei would not care for the smaller panda, despite the zoo’s efforts. After only one week, the smaller panda tragically died.

However, there is a reason for panda mothers abandoning one of their twins. An average panda can eat up to 30 pounds of bamboo in a day. Since it would be too difficult for a mother panda to feed and care for two cubs, they abandon one. Not only that, but mother pandas have a limited amount of milk production, so it is extremely difficult for a mother panda to feed two babies.

Burying Beetles

At least pandas abandon their young instead of killing them… Burying Beetles eat their children.

Burying Beetlez.jpg

The burying beetles usually live inside the bodies of dead mice. The beetles dig through the mouse until it is hollow. However, things get worse. If there isn’t enough food for the beetles to eat, the beetle who doesn’t get food is killed and shared among the family as a meal.

When these beetles aren’t eating their brothers, sisters, or children, they usually eat the mouse carcass they live in.

Tasmanian Devils

The female tasmanian devil is able to give birth to nearly 50 children, however only (approximately) 4 of them ever survive.

tas man ian

The Mother is only able to feed four of her children at a time, so when her fifty children are born, they fight over her. The four children left standing after a gruesome fight survive. If any of the tasmanian devils leave the fight, they starve to death within hours.

On the other side of the spectrum, there is the species with the best Mothers…

Our Mothers take care of us for many of the stages of our life, and they are truly amazing. They are the best*.

Happy Mother’s Day!

*Human mothers truly are the best… Unless you count wolf spider’s mothers.

Wolf spiders ride around on their Mother’s backs for a large majority of their life, including when they are still inside their eggs. Until they have grown to an old enough age, the spider babies almost never get off their Mother’s back.

But that’s besides the point… Our Mother’s are still amazing.

Which of these animals do you think is the worst? Leave a comment with your response!

Death Defiers

Frano Salek – The World’s Luckiest Man

Frano Salek nearly died seven times. He is considered to be the world’s luckiest man. His first near death experience was in 1962, when he was caught in a train crash. Seventeen people died on that train. Only a year later, in 1963, he survived a plane crash. One of the cockpit doors on the plane had randomly became open. Three years later, he found himself in a bus accident. The bus had crashed, and landed in a river. Four years after that, in 1970, Frane’s car randomly caught fire. He escaped the car only seconds before the gas tank exploded.

About twenty years passed, and in 1995, he was hit by a bus, however he was merely injured from the event. In 1996, he drove off of a highway to avoid a truck, breaking the guard rail. He landed on a tree, and watched his car fall 300 feet. Only a few years later, in 2003, he won the lottery.

Roy Sullivan – Lightning

Roy Sullivan was an extremely unlucky park ranger. He was struck by lightning seven different times. The chances of this happening are one in twenty-two septillion. The first time he was struck was in 1942. He was struck while in a guard tower. He tragically died when he committed suicide at the age of 71.

Isidro Mejia – Nails

Isidro Mejia was a construction worker. He fell whilst holding a nail gun, and he ended up with 6 nails in the back of his head. Three of the nails entered the brain. He went into a coma, and an ambulance arrived quickly. Despite the horrible injury, he survived a surgery, and he awoke from his coma.

Ricky Megee – Outback Survival

Ricky Megee survived 71 days in the Outback. All he remembers about how he got stuck there, is that his car broke down. (Some investigators believe he was drugged by a hitchhiker.) When he was in the Outback, he had built a basic shelter, and he created a water dam. He survived by eating frogs, lizards and snakes. When he returned home, Ricky spent a few days in the hospital, and he was able to regain his health.
